(Seoul=NSP NEWS AGENCY) = Hanwha Systems has signed a contract worth 39.8 billion won for the ‘Commercial Low-Orbit Satellite-based Communication System’ project led by Defense Rapid Acquisition Technology Research Institute(DRATRI).
According to Hanwha Systems, this project is to link commercial low-orbit satellite communication networks with the existing tactical networks of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Hanwha Systems will be the first to supply a commercial low-orbit satellite-based communication system to the Korean military, using Eutelsat OneWeb’s low-orbit satellite communications network, which the company invested $300 million(KRW 345 billion at the exchange rate in 2021) to optimize the solution for the Korean military.
By 2026, Hanwha Systems will be in charge of establishing a low-orbit communication network suitable for the military and developing mobile ESA(Electronically Steerable Antenna) terminals for vehicles and ships with increased security.
With the establishment of a military communication system based on commercial low-orbit satellites through this project, the Korean military is expected to be able to overcome the terrain constraints of ground networks and rapidly and seamlessly exchange large amounts of information between manoeuvres, dramatically improving military operational capabilities.
